More than just Somersaults and Cartwheels
Ages: 2 1/2 to 5 years
The Preschool Development Program at DeVeau's School of Gymnastics teaches more than just gymnastics. Students will learn forward and backward rolls, headstands, handstands and cartwheels. They will also learn to hold themselves in a support on bars, to run and jump off a springboard, and proper walking techniques on the balance beam. Trampoline safety will also be taught. In addition to these gymnastics skills students will also be introduced to the following:
Cognitive and Sensory Development
- Color Recognition
- Shape Recognition
- Body part identification
- Use and understanding of spatial concepts (In/Out, Over/Under, Up/Down)
Gross Motor Skill Development
- Spatial Awareness
- Cooperative Learning (sharing)
- Taking turns
- Following directions
- Understanding rules and limits
Preschool classes are grouped by age to ensure appropriate learning. While classes focus on the basics and fundamentals of gymnastics, the presentation of the material varies according to the age of the students. Students will receive instruction on all of the gymnastics apparatus: vault, bars, beam, floor and trampoline. Flexibility, agility, coordination and motor skill exercises are integrated into the class curriculum providing students with strong development base for any sport they may choose to pursue. Placement is determined by the student's age at the beginning of the session. In cases of accelerated or delayed development, the coaching staff will determine appropriate placement.

Parent and MeSearch Classes
Ages: Walking to 2 1/2 years
Parent and Me is a parent participation class introducing walking toddlers to the world of movement and exercise. Children learn to explore their capabilities and limits while in the safety of the gym. Very basic gymnastics skills will be presented, but the major focus of the class is on motor skill development and social development. This class is often a child’s first exposure to a structured class setting - so the real learning comes in understanding and following directions, taking turns and sharing
Class Length: 30 or 45 minutes Student/Teacher ratio: 8:1
By enrolling your child in the DeVeau’s Parent & Me program you are giving your child the opportunity to:
- spend time with you
- have FUN!
- increase his/her self-esteem
- socialize with other children
- learn body movement
Our staff is committed to providing a safe and fun learning environment for both you and your child. Parent & Me focuses on parent-child interaction, gross motor movement, hand-eye coordination, and basic gymnastics skills and positions. Instructors will teach skills on vault, bars, balance beam, floor exercise (tumbling), and trampoline. You’ll also have plenty of fun-time in the pit!
Your role in Parent & Me is to assist your child with activities and skills taught by your instructor. Try to let your child do as much as possible — you’ll be surprised at what they can accomplish! To build self-esteem, praise your child for a job well done (or even for a good try) with hugs, high fives, etc. Please stay with your child at all times. Your instructor will be teaching spotting techniques in class, so you will have an important role in keeping your child safe.
Each session your child will learn four new themes (”Backwards”, “Animals”, “1-2-3″, etc.) in class. Parent & Me lessons are repeated two weeks in a row for better comprehension and retention. If your child does not want to participate in the class activity at some point (it happens to everyone), let your child explore what they are interested in. Try to find a “teachable moment” if possible, and eventually your child will want to rejoin the group. Be sure to stay with the group as much as possible in the main gym (downstairs) for safety’s sake.
Our goal is to give you and your child a fun, safe and educational experience each week. HAVE A GREAT CLASS!
To sign-up for this program, please see someone at the front desk at the gym.
